How can I identify the different families in my community?
A community is a group of people living together who share common interests.Within this community there are different types of families. Families love and take care of each other in many different ways. To belong to a family makes persons comfortable, safe and protected. The family acts as a unit of providing the members within it with the basic needs for their survival. These needs are food, clothing and shelter. Some types of families found in the community are: the Nuclear family, Extended family, Single Parent and Sibling Family. Some persons within the family work to provide the basic needs. We often refer to these persons as the "bread winners" of the family.
A nuclear family is one where there is mommy, daddy, a child or children living together. Sometimes only one parent is the bread winner for the family, but it is important to know that although they may not provide everything needed, their efforts are to be applauded. Secondly the Extended family consists of more members than any other family type in our communities. These members include: mommy. daddy, grandfather, grandmother, aunties, uncles, cousins, brothers and sisters. The Single Parent family on the other hand only has one of either parent who lives with a child or children, while the Sibling family has an older brother or sister acting as the parent towards younger siblings.

Learning begins with family at home. A lot of important things can be learnt from family. Children often learn social graces, proper manners and the importance of identity. Not every family will have a "smooth sailing" lifestyle. Families have their good and bad times, but in the end they work things out and they still remain "One big, happy family". Whichever family you belong to, you are special because nothing matters more than being with family.
The next time you walk in our community, investigate the different types of families that are living there and you will see that a community is made up of different types of families.
